'Deadpool and Wolverine' Lose Momentum
The movie "Pilot," starring Jo Jung-suk, attracted nearly 400,000 viewers on its opening day. According to the Korea Film Council's integrated ticketing system, it drew 373,547 viewers on its unveiling day, March 31. It ranks as the second highest opening among Korean films released this year, following "Crime City 4" (821,466 viewers). It surpassed the opening day performances of this year's top-grossing film "Pamy?" (330,118 viewers) and last year's highest-grossing Korean summer film "Milsu" (318,084 viewers).
"Pilot" is a comedy depicting the story of Han Jung-woo (Jo Jung-suk), a pilot who suddenly becomes unemployed and then re-enters the airline industry as a co-pilot under his younger sister Han Jung-mi's (Han Sun-hwa) name. The film is directed by Kim Han-gyeol, who also directed "More Than Family" (2019).
Initially, the film was expected to compete with Marvel Studios' new release "Deadpool and Wolverine," which premiered a week earlier. However, "Deadpool and Wolverine" only attracted 94,527 viewers the previous day, ranking third at the box office behind "Superbad 4" (95,454 viewers). A rebound over the upcoming weekend seems unlikely, as ticket reservations stood at just 51,552 as of 10 a.m. that day. In contrast, "Pilot" recorded 142,756 reservations, accounting for a 31.7% booking rate.
