Gwangsan-gu is promoting the creation of a Nuri-gil (walking trail) where residents can enjoy the beautiful scenery of Pyeongdong Lake (designated reservoir) located in Myeonghwa-dong 1-beonji area and relax.

This project is a long-cherished wish of local residents who believe that revitalization centered on Pyeongdong Lake, which has over 100 years of history since its establishment in 1926, is necessary.

Based on residents’ opinions gathered through two rounds of public briefings, Gwangsan-gu plans to provide resting spaces for residents by creating a deck path and nature-friendly walking trails to fully enjoy the ecological charm of Pyeongdong Lake, as well as an observatory and rest shelters overlooking the lake. The project also aims to utilize surrounding resources such as the Myeonghwa-dong Janggo Tombs as a ‘tourist attraction.’

The construction is scheduled to start in the first half of 2025 and be completed in 2026. Currently, the ‘Basic and Detailed Design Service for the Pyeongdong Lake Nuri-gil Development Project’ is underway.

The total estimated project cost is 5.3 billion KRW. To ensure smooth project progress, Gwangsan-gu recently applied for special grants from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety and secured 800 million KRW.

To secure the remaining project funds, the district has also applied for the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s ‘2025 Development Restriction Zone Resident Support Project Contest.’

Kim Hu-gon, chairman of the Pyeongdong Residents’ Autonomous Committee, said, “I was impressed by Mayor Park Byung-gyu of Gwangsan-gu and the responsible officials who conducted several site inspections to reflect residents’ opinions, and their efforts to develop the Pyeongdong Lake Nuri-gil even during heavy rain on June 20th during the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s on-site evaluation.”

Park Byung-gyu, mayor of Gwangsan-gu, stated, “Securing the special grant has given momentum to the Pyeongdong Lake Nuri-gil Development Project. We will continue efforts to secure national funding so that Pyeongdong Lake can be transformed into a representative tourist attraction of Gwangju.”
