Honorable Resignation Decision as a Courtesy
Obama Speech on the 2nd Day
U.S. President Joe Biden, who withdrew from the presidential race amid controversy over his age, will deliver a speech on the first day of the Democratic National Convention scheduled for mid-month.
According to CNN on the 31st of last month (local time), President Biden is expected to give a supportive speech for Vice President Kamala Harris on the evening of the first day of the convention, which will be held in Chicago from the 19th to the 22nd.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) plans to effectively designate the first evening of the convention as "Joe Biden's night." They intend to provide ample time for President Biden to gracefully pass on the presidential candidate position and have the schedule naturally shift focus to Vice President Harris afterward as a form of courtesy.
Earlier, after suffering a decisive defeat in the presidential TV debate held at the end of June due to controversies over his age and cognitive abilities, President Biden was pressured by demands within the Democratic Party and withdrew from the presidential race on the 21st of last month.
On the second day of the convention, former President Barack Obama will take the stage to deliver a speech.
The DNC stated that aside from the vice presidential candidate and presidential candidate acceptance speeches on the third and fourth days of the convention, the rest of the schedule has not been finalized. However, they noted that the incumbent president has always played a central role in events for selecting the presidential candidate, hinting that President Biden will have a role.
Since President Biden officially endorsed Vice President Harris after withdrawing from the presidential race last month and endorsements from party figures have followed, Vice President Harris is effectively the Democratic presidential candidate in waiting. The DNC plans to officially select Vice President Harris as the presidential candidate through online voting from the 1st to the 5th of this month. She was nominated as the sole candidate after receiving support from 99% (3,923 delegates) of participating delegates in the petition process to recommend candidates for the vote.
Vice President Harris is expected to announce her running mate as early as the 5th and will begin campaigning in the battleground state of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on the 6th, officially launching the battleground state election campaign. Potential vice presidential candidates include Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, Senator Mark Kelly (Arizona), Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
Currently, Vice President Harris is showing a close race in approval ratings against former President Trump, the Republican presidential candidate. In a recent poll conducted by Bloomberg and Morning Consult targeting seven battleground states, Vice President Harris was found to be leading former President Trump in four states: Michigan, Arizona, Wisconsin, and Nevada.
