Opposition 6 Parties to Propose Impeachment Motion Against Lee Jin-sook Tomorrow... "Illegal Appointment of Directors in Dual Leadership System"

The six opposition parties, including the Democratic Party of Korea, announced plans to file an impeachment motion against Lee Jin-sook, the newly appointed Chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission, on the 1st.

Kim Hyun, the opposition party secretary of the National Assembly's Science, Technology, Information and Broadcasting and Communications Committee and a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, held a press conference at the National Assembly on the afternoon of the 31st and said, "Tomorrow (the 1st), the Democratic Party and the five opposition parties will jointly file an impeachment motion against Chairperson Lee."

The grounds for impeachment cited the illegality of the two-person system of the Korea Communications Commission, consisting of Chairperson Lee and Commissioner Kim Tae-gyu, approving the appointment of directors for public broadcasters.

Rep. Kim stated, "The Korea Communications Commission is a collegial body, and candidates are not selected arbitrarily," adding, "It must have representativeness by considering regional, gender, and occupational balance."

He further said, "It is impossible to verify the disqualifications of numerous candidates in just one day," and added, "Ignoring such basic procedures, they have become a rubber stamp for President Yoon Seok-yeol and are rushing to seize control of the broadcasting system."

The six opposition parties plan to submit the impeachment motion through a joint press conference before the plenary session the following day. This is the third time an impeachment motion has been submitted, following former commissioners Lee Dong-gwan and Kim Hong-il.

After filing the impeachment motion, they plan to immediately report it to the plenary session on the same afternoon. Once the impeachment motion is reported to the plenary session, a secret ballot vote will be held between 24 and 72 hours later.

Meanwhile, President Yoon forcibly appointed Lee Jin-sook as Chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission that morning. The Commission held a closed full meeting at 5 p.m. that day to proceed with the appointment of directors for the Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) and the Broadcasting Culture Promotion Foundation, the major shareholder of Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC).
