Seocho-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) announced on the 31st that it is making every effort to ensure a healthy summer by significantly strengthening resident-centered heatwave measures such as Seoripul Siwon-i, cooling chairs, and heatwave shelters.
The number of ‘Seoripul Cooling Chairs,’ cool seats installed at bus stops, will be expanded from 39 locations to 46 locations thanks to positive user feedback. Along with this, the bus stop air circulation device ‘Seoripul Siwon-i,’ introduced for the first time this year, is being operated at 13 locations to provide a cool resting place for bus passengers.
The ‘Seoripul Wondumak,’ a pedestrian crossing shade tent first implemented by Seocho-gu and now spreading nationwide, will also be expanded by 20 locations, operating at a total of 262 sites.
To mitigate urban heat island effects, the ‘Seoripul Oasis’ project, which lowers temperatures by flowing water along roadsides, will be operated four times a day during summer at seven locations near Yangjae Station, Nambu Bus Terminal Station, and Bangbae Station. In addition, six high-pressure water trucks are deployed to extend the watering operations on main roads from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. until 5 p.m., alleviating road heating.
Indoor heatwave shelters for the elderly are also being operated at 104 locations. They are open to anyone on weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and during heatwave warnings, 25 locations extend their hours until 9 p.m. Notably, this year, five public facilities (libraries) have been designated as heatwave shelters to enhance convenience.
Furthermore, the district is focusing on minimizing damage by intensively managing heatwave-vulnerable groups through daily safety checks for elderly people requiring care, prevention of heat-related illnesses using IoT monitoring and AI care robots, operating street counseling teams for the homeless, and providing relief supplies (bottled water, cool scarves, etc.). In addition, heat illness prevention education is conducted for construction site personnel, and working conditions at construction sites are inspected to strengthen safety measures.
Mayor Jeon Seong-su said, “We will do our best to strengthen practical heatwave measures so that residents can feel convenience even in small aspects of daily life and spend the summer safely and healthily.”
