Passing Down the Value of Arirang ... Promoting Community Vitalization
The Miryang Cultural Tourism Foundation in Gyeongnam (CEO Lee Chiwoo, hereinafter referred to as the Foundation) and the Miryang Arirang Preservation Association announced on the 31st that they will hold the "Korean Peninsula Arirang Community Revitalization Academic Conference" at Daejeon KW Convention Center on August 2 at 2 p.m.
This academic conference, which aims to promote the value of Arirang?including Miryang Arirang?and revitalize the transmission community, was previously held in Seoul in 2022 and Changwon in 2023. This year, it will be held in Daejeon to further expand the value and academic research of Arirang throughout the Korean Peninsula.
This academic conference, part of the 2024 Transmission Community Revitalization Project by the National Heritage Administration, will feature two main sessions: Part 1, "UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and Diaspora," and Part 2, "Aspects of the Miryang Arirang Community." Following these, a comprehensive discussion will be held under the broad theme of "Revitalization of the Arirang Community," with eight experts participating. The discussion will be chaired by Kwon Okyoung, Vice President of Busan University of Foreign Studies, and moderated by Kim Minji, Director of the Korean Music Education Society.
The presentation topics include: ▲The Origins of Folk Song Arirang (Kim Youngwoon, former Director of the National Gugak Center) ▲Ethnomusicological Study of Korean Diaspora Arirang (Kim Bohui, Deputy Director of Mudol International Institute of Korean Studies) ▲A Study on Color Terms in Miryang Arirang (Sim Sanggyo, Professor at Busan National University of Education) ▲A Study on the Musical Characteristics of Miryang Arirang Featured in "Miryang Folk Song Collection" (2010) (Hwang Suim, Researcher at the Institute of Humanities, Pusan National University), among others.
The comprehensive discussion will be joined by Jung Eunkyung, Professor at Busan National University of Education; Lee Jooyoung, Visiting Professor at Korea University; Song Misook, Artistic Director at the National Heritage Promotion Agency; and Jang Hyeonho, Secretary-General of the Miryang Arirang Preservation Association, who will engage in an in-depth discussion on revitalizing the Arirang community on the Korean Peninsula.
This academic conference is expected to serve as a platform for academic research discussing the value of UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage and transmission communities through Arirang, and is anticipated to greatly contribute to the revitalization and global branding of intangible heritage through Arirang-related academic studies.
