On the 25th, Chinese media rushed to report that Tang Wei had died. The news quickly spread through social networking services (SNS) and online communities. On Weibo, a representative SNS in China, the keyword "Tang Wei death" even ranked first in the search bar.

Subsequently, there were reports that Tang Wei's Chinese agency denied the death rumors and expressed displeasure through a statement on the 29th. According to the report, "Tang Wei is one of many celebrities who have suffered from rumors," and "Tang Wei is alive. Do not believe the content circulating on the internet."

However, the agency's position is also reported to be not officially confirmed, causing shock. When YTN contacted Tang Wei's agency, a representative said, "We were not even aware that death rumors were spreading in China. The agency has never officially issued a statement regarding this," expressing some bewilderment.

This is not the first time Tang Wei has been plagued by baseless fake news. In 2022, Chinese media reported that Tang Wei and her husband, director Kim Tae-yong, had been separated for half a year, sparking divorce rumors. In 2023, a media outlet published an article titled "Goodbye, Tang Wei," spreading retirement rumors.

Meanwhile, Tang Wei has long been in conflict with the Chinese film industry. Starring in director Ang Lee's 2007 film Lust, Caution, Tang Wei faced controversy over the intense love scenes and allegations that the film glorified the pro-Japanese Shanghai government and traitors, leading to her expulsion from the film industry by Chinese authorities in March 2008. Afterwards, Tang Wei applied to immigrate to Hong Kong under the Hong Kong government's "Outstanding Talent Admission Scheme," passed the qualification screening, and obtained a Hong Kong ID card.
