With just a smartphone, it has become possible to use various services that require identity verification, such as resident registration cards and driver's licenses.

PASS App Replaces Driver's License and Resident ID... Also Verifies Pets

SK Telecom, KT, and LG Uplus announced on the 31st that the PASS mobile driver's license verification service now holds the same legal effect as a physical driver's license, following the revision of the Road Traffic Act.

PASS first began offering mobile driver's license verification services through an application in June 2020, the first in Korea, under the ICT Regulatory Sandbox of the Ministry of Science and ICT. With the enforcement of the revised Road Traffic Act, the service can now be provided to customers more conveniently and securely.

PASS also provides a mobile resident registration verification service. As a result, both mobile resident registration and driver's license verification services have the same legal effect as physical ID cards, enabling users to access various services requiring identity verification with just one smartphone.

Users can easily register by capturing their ID or entering information in the PASS app and completing the identity verification process. Leveraging these advantages, the number of subscribers to the PASS mobile ID verification service has surpassed 11 million.

The PASS mobile ID verification service is expected to be used for identity verification and adult authentication procedures in various sectors, including public areas such as police driver's license checks, community centers, public election polling stations, and domestic airline check-ins, as well as convenience stores, movie theaters, and car rentals.

The PASS mobile ID verification service can also be used in the identity verification process required for medical treatment under health insurance at hospitals and clinics. Starting this October, Yonsei University College of Medicine's Yongin Severance Hospital plans to utilize the PASS mobile ID verification service QR code for patient identity verification.

In addition, PASS is launching a new mobile verification service for companion animals. As the population of pet owners and the pet industry rapidly expand, the need for simple animal registration and information verification procedures is increasing.

The PASS companion animal verification service includes basic information such as the easily forgotten animal registration number, name, gender, breed, and neutering status, along with a QR code that can be used for identification at service locations.

The PASS companion animal verification service is expected to be mainly used when entering local government pet playgrounds or pet hotels. For example, presenting the verification QR code upon entry to dog parks in Dongjak-gu, Seoul, or the Baekmi Healing Yard pet family playground in Hwaseong City allows immediate access without additional procedures.

Furthermore, the service will be linked with pet owner information to enhance usability and expand applications by integrating with pet care services that provide records of pet information (feeding, excretion, walking, missing), health management, and feed ingredient analysis functions.

To celebrate surpassing 10 million subscribers to the PASS mobile ID verification service, SKT plans to hold an event until the 25th of next month, offering prizes such as AirPods Max and Baedal Minjok gift certificates through a lottery for customers who newly register for the mobile ID verification service on PASS.

The three telecom companies stated, "With this revision of the Road Traffic Act, customers can now prove their mobile identity without inconvenience and use it in various places. By adding the companion animal verification service to enhance user convenience, we will continue to strive to make PASS more conveniently usable in even more places."
