Collecting Carbon Emission Data with Proprietary Equipment
From Data Collection to Analysis and Consulting
Product Carbon Footprint. It quantitatively represents the amount of greenhouse gases emitted throughout the entire process of raw material extraction, production, transportation, distribution, consumption, and disposal of products and services. The importance of this carbon footprint is gradually increasing in the global market. The EU's CBAM (Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism) and digital product passports are representative examples. Now, companies face a rapid environmental shift where carbon data management is essential. This issue concerns not only large corporations but also all small and medium-sized suppliers in the product supply chain. Glassdome is a carbon emission data management solution company that provides solutions to this problem. By attaching their independently developed equipment at the desired data collection location without separate wiring work, it enables carbon emission data collection via wireless communication.
Ham Jin-gi, CEO of Glassdom Korea, is explaining the international standard certification for product carbon footprint assessment and posing for a commemorative photo.
On the 31st, Ham Jinki, CEO of Glassdome Korea, stated, "Glassdome already possesses proven technology in the field of manufacturing process carbon footprint data management," adding, "We will target partners in the electric vehicle and battery sectors to secure the market." Glassdome’s solution is characterized by calculating product carbon emissions based on real data collected during the manufacturing process. When a 'gateway' is attached at the location where data collection is desired, data such as electricity, refrigerant, steam, gas, raw material input, and waste amounts are gathered. Glassdome explained that compared to existing systems, this data can be collected and managed integrally at one-third the cost and one-fifth the time.
When Glassdome was established in Silicon Valley in 2019, its main business model was a smart factory manufacturing process operation optimization solution. CEO Kim Daewoong, a Stanford University computer engineering graduate, continues to focus on this business. The product carbon footprint solution was developed in earnest after CEO Ham joined and is now led by Glassdome Korea. CEO Ham, who holds a Ph.D. in Nuclear Engineering from KAIST and previously served as head of the energy research lab at Hyundai Heavy Industries R&D Center, became interested in carbon reduction-related solutions. He explained, "If a product is assembled from multiple parts, the carbon footprint must represent not only the energy required for assembly but also the total energy used to produce each individual part in numerical terms."
CEO Ham paid close attention to the continuously strengthening global regulations related to carbon emissions. In particular, the EU desires that all incoming products display their carbon footprint, recycling rate, and origin history like a passport. However, companies have not been able to secure accurate carbon footprint figures from their supply chain partners. Given that most partners are small and medium-sized enterprises, the reality is that supply chain data is often inaccurate.
Seeing the market growth potential here, CEO Ham enabled real data collection through a self-developed solution and made it possible to support monitoring and reporting to comply with global regulations. He said, "It is important to calculate using data actually collected on-site," adding, "Many companies collect related data on-site, but few can analyze and provide consulting."
Glassdome obtained the international standard 'ISO14067' for carbon footprint assessment this year. By measuring and reporting carbon emissions through Glassdome’s solution, users receive results compliant with this international standard. The cost is also reasonably set for small and medium-sized suppliers in the supply chain. He said, "Although costs vary depending on the sales scale or number of products of small and medium-sized enterprises, we will set the solution cost at the level of one employee’s labor cost to enable compliance with regulations."
