"Steering AI Policy Direction" Establishment of 'National AI Committee'... President Yoon as Chairman

Composed of approximately 45 members
2-year term civilian members appointed by the President

A Presidential Commission on National AI will be established to consolidate the artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities of the government and the private sector and to make policy decisions.

On the 30th, the Ministry of Science and ICT announced that the "Regulations on the Establishment and Operation of the National AI Commission" were approved at the Cabinet meeting. The National AI Commission will play a role in consolidating public and private capabilities and leading the direction of innovation in the AI sector nationwide.


President Yoon Seok-yeol will serve as the chairperson to unite nationwide capabilities. The commission will consist of up to 45 members, including one chairperson and one vice-chairperson.


Government members will include 10 ministers from related ministries: the Minister of Economy and Finance, Minister of Education, Minister of Science and ICT, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of the Interior and Safety, Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, Chairperson of the Korea Communications Commission, Chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission, and Chairperson of the Digital Platform Government Commission, along with the Senior Presidential Secretary for Science and Technology (secretary) and the Third Deputy Director of the National Security Office.


Private appointed members will be individuals with extensive expertise and experience in AI-related fields such as technology, economy, humanities, and society, appointed by the president. The vice-chairperson will be designated by the president from among the private members. The term of office for appointed members is two years.


The commission will deliberate and coordinate overall AI policies, including ▲ major AI-related policies ▲ establishment of research and development and investment strategies ▲ expansion of infrastructure such as data centers ▲ identification and improvement of regulations ▲ dissemination of AI ethical principles ▲ changes and responses in various sectors such as education, labor, and economy due to AI development.


Additionally, a support group composed of private experts and relevant public officials will be established to assist the commission’s work and operations.


The AI Strategy High-Level Council, launched by the Ministry of Science and ICT in April, will be elevated to the National AI Commission. The Ministry of Science and ICT stated, "We plan to promptly complete the commission’s composition and prepare smoothly for the commission’s inauguration ceremony and the first meeting."
