Hwaseong City in Gyeonggi Province will recruit the '2024 Hwaseong City Craft Masters' from the 12th to the 23rd of next month to preserve and develop traditional craft techniques.
This year, two craft masters will be selected across six fields: metal, ceramics, wood lacquer, textiles & leather, paper, and others. Applicants must have worked in the relevant craft field for more than 15 years, have been registered residents of Hwaseong City for at least 5 years as of the announcement date, and have worked in a business located within the city for more than 5 years, fulfilling all three requirements.
The city will select the craft masters through document screening, on-site evaluation, and review by the Master Craftsman Deliberation Committee. The evaluation will assess the level of expertise, contribution to the development of craft culture, and technical proficiency. Selected craft masters will receive benefits including ▲ a technology encouragement grant of 5 million KRW ▲ the title of 'Craft Master' ▲ a certificate and nameplate of mastery.
Application documents can be found on the announcement board of Hwaseong City Hall’s website, and applications must be submitted in person to the Hwaseong City Corporate Support Division. Yoon Soon-seok, head of the Corporate Support Division, stated, "Through the selection of craft masters, we plan to discover and support outstanding holders of craft skills within the region."
Meanwhile, Hwaseong City selected Guk Seung-cheon (wood lacquer field, Najeonchilgi) and Lee Seong-jae (wood lacquer field, Maekgan craft) as craft masters in 2022.
