Experience Zone and Goods Zone Set Up on 1st Floor of Lotte World Mall
Global Views Reach 10 Billion... A Leading Case of IP Expansion
Last Year's 'Bbangbbang-i' Pop-up Store Achieved Great Success
The popular webtoon 'Lookism' is meeting readers through a pop-up store after 10 years of serialization.
According to Park Tae-joon Manhwa Company on the 29th, from the 14th to the 25th of next month, a fourteen-day event will be held at the Atrium on the first floor of Lotte World Mall in Jamsil, Seoul, featuring an experience zone and a goods zone. This is the first offline event in Korea to spotlight 'Lookism.' A representative from Park Tae-joon Manhwa Company said, "To commemorate the 10th anniversary of the serialization, we plan to offer various attractions and enjoyable activities."
Serialized by Park Tae-joon since 2014, 'Lookism' is highly popular not only in Korea but also overseas. The global cumulative views exceed 10 billion. It currently ranks first among Friday webtoons and second overall in Naver Webtoon’s view rankings. It has been consistently serialized without a single hiatus, attracting about 30 million viewers monthly.
This webtoon is also a representative case of domestic intellectual property (IP) expansion. It shares its story universe with titles such as 'Life Reset,' which ranked first in total views on Naver Webtoon, as well as 'Fighting Spirit,' 'Quest for Supremacy,' 'Manager Kim,' 'Juvenile Law,' and 'Youth Rules.' All of these feature characters from 'Lookism' as main characters or give them significant roles. Among these, 'Manager Kim' and 'Juvenile Law' are scheduled to be produced as dramas in Korea. 'Fighting Spirit,' which has already been adapted into an animation and aired on Japan’s Fuji TV, is also being developed into a video production.
The 'Lookism' pop-up store is an event where visitors can meet all these characters. A representative from Park Tae-joon Manhwa Company explained, "We have prepared about 300 products, including clothing that highlights the characteristics of popular characters, as well as accessories, stationery, dolls, and figures. Some products are exclusive to the pop-up store." They added, "Based on the know-how accumulated from operating pop-up stores last year, we will strive to ensure that many readers have the opportunity to purchase."
Park Tae-joon Manhwa Company operated pop-up stores featuring the popular character 'Bbangbbang-i' at Hyundai Department Store The Hyundai Seoul in August last year and in Seongsu-dong, Seongdong-gu, Seoul in December of the same year. The former attracted over 20,000 readers and recorded sales of 1.3 billion KRW, while the latter drew over 40,000 readers and achieved sales of 3 billion KRW.
Meanwhile, 'Lookism' met local readers in Los Angeles (LA), USA, from the 24th to the 28th. This was through the 'K-Story & Comics' event organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Creative Content Agency to enhance awareness of K-webtoons and comics. Alongside titles like 'Solo Leveling' and 'The Remarried Empress,' it was selected as a representative Korean webtoon IP and showcased various experiential events.
