Seocho-gu, Seoul (Mayor Jeon Seong-su) announced on the 28th that it is seeing significant effects from closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring through the Smart Hub Center (control center), which played a decisive role in capturing and arresting drug crime scenes.

In fact, on the 20th, a control center staff member discovered a suspected drug crime case through CCTV, reported it, and collaborated with the Seocho Police Station to arrest the so-called "drug throwing" crime on site.

The district is putting all its efforts into various incident, accident, and crime prevention activities through recent video patrols, including the arrest of drug offenders. The number of 112 emergency calls reported through the control center’s own detection reached 121 cases in the first half of this year alone, and last year, it recorded a total of 12,236 crime responses, including the five major violent crimes such as theft and assault, as well as drug offenses and drunk driving.

Seocho-gu explained that the control center’s self-detection report also shone in the recent arrest of a drunk driver. During a video patrol in an entertainment district, the center captured a staggering intoxicated person getting into the driver’s seat of a vehicle and moving, immediately reported it to 112, enabling the driver to be arrested on the spot. The control center’s quick response helped prevent a drunk driving accident and protect residents’ safety.

In this way, the control center is playing a vital role in crime prevention and safety enhancement in the area. The district official stated that the ability to respond quickly to various incidents and accidents was the result of the professionalism and persistence of the staff who have been in charge of CCTV monitoring for several years.

To more actively prevent the increasingly diverse accidents and crimes, the district is introducing various types of intelligent CCTV and expanding the smart monitoring system. Last year, 100 units of an intelligent selective monitoring system that detects abnormal behaviors such as wandering, falling, and assault and alerts monitoring staff were introduced, and by the end of this year, 805 units will be further installed in densely populated residential areas, parks, and hiking trail entrances.

Additionally, since the end of last year, the control center has been utilizing an artificial intelligence (AI) high-speed search system that rapidly analyzes CCTV footage to quickly track and locate missing persons or crime suspects. Through this, the center has improved resident safety by promptly finding lost dementia patients and arranging their return home. The district plans to continue expanding the intelligent CCTV system integrated with AI video analysis technology.

Mayor Jeon Seong-su said, “The control center conducts 24-hour video patrols throughout every corner of the district, including crime-prone areas, to protect the safety of local residents on the front lines of public safety. We will create a safe smart city Seocho where residents can enjoy a secure and comfortable daily life by expanding the CCTV monitoring system using the latest AI technology.”
