15-Year Prison Sentence Requested in First Trial
A man in his 60s who killed his wife by beating her for not opening the front door was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the first trial, and the prosecution has appealed.
On the 25th, when the unprecedented suspension of the Prosecutor General's duties took place, a heavy silence filled the Supreme Prosecutors' Office in Seocho-gu, Seoul. Following the Ministry of Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae's order to exclude him from duty, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office immediately entered an acting duty system that day, and Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol did not come to work. On the 26th, the Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office announced that it had filed an appeal against the first trial verdict for Park Mo (64), who was indicted on charges of injury resulting in death.
Park is accused of repeatedly beating his wife to death at their home in Seongbuk-gu, Seoul, last February. It was investigated that when his wife did not open the front door, he broke through the screen door to commit the crime.
During the trial, Park claimed that he only hit her on the forehead or cheek a few times. However, the court did not accept this, citing evidence of full-body assault such as fractured ribs and ruptures inside the mouth. Previously, the prosecution had requested a 15-year prison sentence for Park.
A prosecution official explained the reason for the appeal, saying, "The defendant brutally and indiscriminately beat his spouse, with whom he had lived for over 30 years, leading to her death, which is an extremely serious offense. Considering that the defendant denies the crime and shows no genuine apology or remorse, we judged that the first trial sentence does not reflect the severity of the crime."
