Policy Activities with Ministry of Education and Busan City
Choi Jae-won, President of Pusan National University, was born in 1965 and graduated from Busan Dongseong High School. He earned his degree in Control and Instrumentation Engineering from Seoul National University, where he also completed his master's and doctoral degrees.
President Choi joined Pusan National University as a professor in 1996 and served for 28 years, holding positions such as Director of Planning and Dean of the College of Engineering. He contributed to various policy activities in the engineering field, including serving as a member of the Busan Metropolitan City Science and Technology Promotion Committee, the Ministry of Education Policy Advisory Committee, and as president of the National Association of Public Engineering College Deans.

Recognized for his innovative achievements, he received the Prime Minister's Award for Contributions to Science and Technology Promotion in 2002 and the Minister of Education, Science and Technology Commendation for Contributions to Engineering Education Innovation in 2009. Additionally, he has an impressive record of research awards, including the Excellent Science and Technology Paper Award and the Lee Ki-jun Engineering Innovation Award.
Earlier this year, President Choi was elected as the president of Pusan National University after three rounds of voting in the presidential candidate election held in May. He is the first non-Pusan National University alumnus to become president since the implementation of the direct election system. Upon his inauguration, he announced the slogan "Arise PNU, Higher Together," pledging to enhance the status and pride of Pusan National University.
