Local Water Supply Modernization Project
Annual Direct Tap Water Production Cost Savings of 1.1 Billion Won
Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do announced that it received a final passing grade with an excellent result, achieving a water service rate of 95.1%, which exceeded the initial target rate (85%) by 10.1%, according to the review results of the ‘Boseong-gun Local Waterworks Modernization Project Performance Evaluation Committee’ hosted by the Korea Water and Wastewater Works Association (hereinafter ‘the Association’) held on the 22nd.
The ‘Boseong-gun Local Waterworks Modernization Project’ is a large-scale national project with a budget of 24.2 billion KRW, including national funds, invested over five years since 2019. The project was promoted targeting the Hoejeong water supply area in Beolgyo-eup by signing a consignment and entrustment agreement with Korea Water Resources Corporation in 2019.
According to the related project guidelines, the water service rate performance guarantee was completed over one year from April 2023, and through this review, the Association gave the final evaluation of the project performance.
The county replaced 32.9 km of aging water supply pipelines, established block and maintenance management systems, conducted leak detection and repairs, raising the water service rate from 41.7% before the project to 95.1%, achieving an effect of reducing annual water leakage by 1.01 million tons. When converted to the direct production cost of tap water, this corresponds to an annual cost saving of 1.1 billion KRW.
The ‘water service rate’ refers to the ratio of the total amount of water used, measured by the final consumer’s meter and billed as water charges, to the total amount of water produced and supplied annually from the water purification plant. Proper management of the water service rate can reduce energy and economic losses required for water production and supply, and furthermore contribute to the preservation of precious water resources.
Kim Cheol-woo, Governor of Boseong-gun, said, “Based on the achievements obtained through this modernization project, we will expand the implementation to other areas to improve the overall water service rate of Boseong-gun. Furthermore, we will reinvest the saved budget into the expansion and improvement of water supply facilities to do our best to enhance water welfare by stably supplying clean drinking water.”
