Yeonggwang Nagwol Offshore Wind Power Project Monopile Unit 1
Short Production Time and Cost-Effective Advantages
"Plans to Supply Monopiles Domestically and to Japan"
GS Entec has shipped the offshore wind turbine monopile foundation structure for the first time in a domestic offshore wind power project exceeding 100 MW.
On the 25th, GS Entec announced that it successfully shipped one monopile for the Yeonggwang Nakwol offshore wind power project from its Yongjam factory in Ulsan Metropolitan City. The first monopile produced by GS Entec measures 71.2 meters in length, 7.5 meters in diameter, and weighs 895.6 tons, capable of supporting a 5.7 MW turbine. A total of 64 monopiles will be supplied to the Yeonggwang Nakwol project, managed by Myeongwoon Industrial Development, by September next year.
The Yeonggwang Nakwol project is a large-scale offshore wind power project with a capacity of 365 MW, being constructed near Nakwol-myeon, Yeonggwang-gun, Jeollanam-do, South Korea. GS Entec signed a monopile supply contract worth 200 billion KRW last year for this project.
Monopiles are cylindrical structures made by welding large steel plates, serving as support foundations for offshore wind turbines. Compared to traditional foundation types such as floating, tripod, or jacket structures, monopiles offer advantages of shorter manufacturing periods and lower costs.
GS Entec, a subsidiary of GS Global, has primarily focused on manufacturing chemical equipment for oil refining and petrochemical plants since its establishment in 1988. However, since the 2020s, it has actively pursued business transformation in line with GS Group’s eco-friendly future business strategy.
Last year, GS Entec signed an exclusive technology license agreement through a strategic partnership with Sif Netherlands BV, a global leader in monopile offshore wind foundation technology.
Through technical cooperation with Sif, GS Entec successfully transformed its existing chemical equipment manufacturing plant in Ulsan into a monopile production factory for offshore wind power. Recently, it has been making a large-scale investment of 300 billion KRW to introduce Sif’s latest automated equipment.
A GS Entec official stated, "Using the monopiles supplied to the Yeonggwang Nakwol project as a milestone, we plan to promote the supply of monopiles for ongoing offshore wind power projects in South Korea and Japan."
