Conservative-leaning American Fox News has invited former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris to a TV debate scheduled for September, CNBC reported on the 24th (local time). This comes just one day after former President Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, expressed his willingness to participate in at least one debate with Vice President Harris, who is expected to be the Democratic presidential candidate.
According to a copy of the letter obtained by CNBC, Fox News plans to hold a presidential candidate TV debate between former President Trump and Vice President Harris on September 17 in Pennsylvania. The moderators will be Fox News anchors Brett Baier and Martha MacCallum. Fox News also stated that it is open to discussing specific conditions such as the date, format, location, and audience attendance with the presidential candidates' campaign teams. Neither campaign responded to CNBC's request for comment on whether they would participate in the Fox News debate.
Originally, a second debate between President Joe Biden and former President Trump was scheduled to be hosted by ABC in September. However, the situation became uncertain after President Biden suffered a heavy defeat in the first TV debate last month and eventually withdrew from the candidacy amid concerns about his age. It has been reported that the Trump campaign has been pushing to change the broadcaster hosting the second presidential TV debate from ABC to the conservative-leaning Fox News.
The day before, former President Trump expressed dissatisfaction during a call with reporters hosted by the Republican National Committee, saying, "I want to debate her (Harris)," but also that "ABC is not thrilled," which is related to this matter. He had insisted that Fox News, not ABC, should be the host of the debate immediately after President Biden withdrew. Former President Trump has consistently publicly praised Fox News, which leans conservative.
