Daejeon Mayor Lee Jangwoo held a meeting on the 24th with representatives of local bio-venture companies, where he expressed his commitment to fostering a national advanced strategic industry specialized complex in the bio sector and outlined his policies for the bio industry.
The meeting was attended by representatives from 22 companies, including leading bio enterprises such as Legochem Bioscience, Alteogen, Bioneer, and the global bio company Merck.
Mayor Lee stated, "The recent designation as an Opportunity Development Zone and the successful attraction of a national advanced strategic industry bio-specialized complex are acknowledgments by the nation of Daejeon's solid foundation in advanced science and technology and its self-sustaining bio ecosystem."
He continued, "These achievements are thanks to the bold investments made by bio entrepreneurs who looked to the future," and emphasized, "Going forward, I will invest organizational resources and capital, drawing on Daejeon's 30 years of experience in nurturing the bio industry, to ensure the success of the specialized complex."
He added, "For the success of the Daejeon bio-specialized complex, it is essential for academia, industry, research institutes, and medical institutions to cooperate as one team, leveraging the concentrated innovation resources in infrastructure, talent, enterprises, and R&D," and continued, "We will establish a systematic operational framework to this end."
Mayor Lee also said, "With various forms of government support such as industrial complex infrastructure, expedited licensing processes, export market development, and priority allocation of government R&D budgets, we will closely cooperate with relevant ministries to enable bio companies to invest freely," adding, "We will further accelerate our efforts to make Daejeon the best city in Korea for business and a world-class economic city."
Meanwhile, on June 20, Daejeon City succeeded in having the Ansan Advanced Defense Convergence District and the Wanchon Advanced Biomedical Innovation District designated as Opportunity Development Zones, and on June 27, it successfully attracted the national advanced strategic industry bio-specialized complex.
