Trump Team Seeks Venues Accommodating Thousands Including Basketball Arenas
Trump Known as Outdoor Rally Enthusiast
"Crowds Are the Source of Trump's Energy"
The U.S. Secret Service (SS), which came under scrutiny for failing to prevent an assassination attempt on the Republican presidential candidate, reportedly advised former President Donald Trump's team to halt outdoor rallies and campaign activities, the Washington Post (WP) reported on the 23rd (local time).
According to sources familiar with the matter, SS officials recommended that the Trump campaign suspend future large-scale outdoor rallies and events following the shooting incident at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on the 13th. In response, the Trump camp is said to be seeking large indoor venues capable of accommodating thousands of people, including basketball arenas.
It is presumed that former President Trump, known as an outdoor rally enthusiast, will face a deep dilemma. Despite the pressure to maintain momentum as new presidential contender Vice President Kamala Harris gains ground rapidly, he is now in a position where he must forgo the atmosphere and promotional benefits unique to outdoor rallies. WP noted, "Since his first presidential run, Trump has held hundreds of outdoor rallies," adding, "Tailgate parties in parking lots, vendors lined up near rally sites, and large parades have drawn a kind of cult-like popularity among Trump supporters."
Sarah Matthews, who served as White House spokesperson during Trump's presidency, explained, "Former President Trump often got upset when outdoor venues did not fill quickly because people couldn't get through security checkpoints," and "He derives great joy and energy from being with the crowd." A Trump campaign official also pointed out that while indoor rallies are easier to control and better for security, they are more expensive and cannot provide the special experience that only outdoor rallies offer.
Meanwhile, Kimberly Cheatle, the SS Director, resigned on the same day, taking responsibility for the security failure involving former President Trump. This came just one day after she expressed her refusal to resign during a House hearing the previous day. In an email sent to staff, Director Cheatle stated, "As director, I take full responsibility for the security failure," and "With a heavy heart, I have made the difficult decision to step down from my position in light of recent events." President Joe Biden issued a statement announcing plans to appoint a new Secret Service director.
