Gangnam-gu, Seoul (District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong) announced on the 24th that it will provide a total subsidy of 100 million KRW for 120 electric motorcycles (two-wheelers) by December this year.

As of the end of June this year, there are 16,763 two-wheelers in Gangnam-gu, of which 6.9% are electric two-wheelers, totaling 1,159 units. Although this is higher than the Seoul city average (3.4%), Gangnam-gu has a high usage rate of delivery services, resulting in many delivery motorcycles operating, which causes significant noise pollution in residential areas due to motorcycle engine noise.

Accordingly, the district plans to accelerate the realization of carbon neutrality by 2050 by converting internal combustion engine two-wheelers, the main sources of urban noise and air pollution, into electric two-wheelers through the "Electric Two-Wheeler Subsidy Support Project."

This project is supported by national, city, and district funds at a 1:1:1 ratio, with differential support depending on the vehicle type. When Seoul citizens purchase electric two-wheelers, they receive subsidies from the Ministry of Environment and Seoul City, and the district additionally provides district subsidies on top of these.

The support amount ranges from 540,000 KRW (light type) to 1,000,000 KRW (small, medium, and others), depending on type, size, and performance. The supported vehicle types are those announced by Seoul City as eligible for Ministry of Environment subsidies: general type (light) includes 5 models from 4 companies, general type (small) includes 50 models from 21 companies, general type (medium) includes 1 model from 1 company, and other types include 9 models from 7 companies. An additional 100,000 KRW subsidy is provided for delivery two-wheelers to promote the replacement with electric two-wheelers. Also, a minimum self-payment of 200,000 KRW is set to ensure that the sum of subsidy and self-payment does not exceed the purchase price.

Eligibility for application includes individuals aged 16 or older who have resided in Gangnam-gu for more than 30 days as of the application date, sole proprietors with business locations in Gangnam-gu, and corporations with business locations in Gangnam-gu. Priority support is given to persons with disabilities, low-income groups, veterans and independence activists, small business owners, multi-child families, and those replacing internal combustion engine two-wheelers.

Applicants can submit the electric two-wheeler purchase subsidy application form and two-wheeler usage report certificate, available on the district office website under the public notices menu, by visiting the district office or by mail. Applications are accepted until the end of December but may close early if the budget is exhausted.

District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong stated, "I hope many residents will participate in the first electric two-wheeler subsidy project supported by Gangnam-gu to open a carbon-neutral future together," and added, "We will create a clear and clean urban environment by not only providing subsidies but also building infrastructure to replace internal combustion engine two-wheelers with electric two-wheelers."
