No Evidence Beyond Victim's Testimony Causes Difficulties... Prosecution Finds Clue Through Video Reflected in Washing Machine

Prosecutor's Office Selects 5 Outstanding Forensic Cases in Q2

A case in which additional crimes committed by a suspect who sexually assaulted his ex-girlfriend and completely denied the offenses were uncovered through video analysis has been selected as an excellent forensic investigation case for the second quarter by the Supreme Prosecutors' Office.

On the 23rd, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office announced that a total of five cases, including one investigated by the Criminal Division of the Gangneung Branch Office (Chief Prosecutor Kuk Jin), were selected as excellent forensic investigation cases for the second quarter.

The case investigated by the Criminal Division of the Gangneung Branch Office had no clear evidence other than the victim's testimony. Suspect A was arrested and sent to prosecution on charges of raping the victim, whom he was dating, six times between March and April, but he completely denied the crimes. In the approximately 39-minute video submitted as evidence by the victim, scenes where both individuals could be specifically identified lasted only about 2 minutes.

The investigation team confirmed that the remaining approximately 37 minutes of the crime scenes were reflected and recorded on the plastic lid of a washing machine in the video submitted by the victim. They requested the Supreme Prosecutors' Office Forensic Science Analysis Division to enlarge and enhance the video quality, and confirmed scenes of the crime occurring at times other than the previously reported dates. Ultimately, A confessed to all the crimes and was indicted while in custody.

Additionally, the Information Technology Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Ahn Dong-geon), which indicted former Samsung Electronics Vice President Ahn Seung-ho and others for illegally acquiring Samsung Electronics' confidential information and filing a patent lawsuit, was also selected as an excellent case. The Supreme Prosecutors' Office explained, "By promptly initiating the investigation, decisive evidence was secured, and through the investigation, the illegal activities of the patent management company (NPE) operator were identified and punished for the first time. The U.S. court recognized the evidentiary value and credibility of the investigation records containing the progress and evidence of the Korean prosecution's investigation."

Furthermore, the Criminal Division 2 of the Mokpo Branch Office of the Gwangju District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Lee Kyung-seok), which restored CCTV footage that the Coast Guard could not recover and, with forensic advice, identified charges of murder and aiding murder against the captain and crew, and the Women and Children Crime Investigation Division of the Seoul Eastern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Lim Yoo-kyung), which clearly revealed charges of quasi-rape through DNA and chemical reanalysis, were also selected as excellent cases.
