The difficult process of forming the second half leadership of the Seoul Metropolitan Council ended with an agreement in which the People Power Party took the Education Committee and the Democratic Party took the Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee.
The People Power Party of the Seoul Metropolitan Council (Representative Lee Seong-bae) and the Democratic Party (Representative Seong Heum-je) reached a sudden agreement on the formation of the second half leadership of the 11th Seoul Metropolitan Council on the 23rd.
For the remaining two years, the ruling People Power Party will chair the Steering Committee as well as the Administration and Autonomy Committee, Planning and Economy Committee, Health and Welfare Committee, Housing and Spatial Committee, Urban Planning and Balance Committee, Transportation Committee, and Education Committee.
The Democratic Party will chair the Environment and Water Resources Committee, Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee, and Urban Safety and Construction Committee.
The Democratic Party will lead the third-year chairmanship of the Policy Committee, while the People Power Party will lead the Budget Policy Committee in the third and fourth years and the Policy Committee in the fourth year.
Negotiations, which were once on the brink of collapse due to differences between the two parties, reportedly gained momentum through swift leadership formation, as a consensus was formed around the goals of “practicing a working council and restoring citizens’ trust.”
People Power Party Representative Lee Seong-bae and Democratic Party Representative Seong Heum-je jointly stated, “There is no ruling or opposition party when it comes to aiming for a working Seoul Metropolitan Council for the citizens.” The two party leaders promised to focus on legislative activities prioritizing citizens, saying, “We narrowed conflicts and differences and reached a smooth agreement in the spirit of mutual respect and cooperation.”
