The event held at Macomb Community College in Michigan, USA, was attended by Shin Jong-gye, Technical Advisor of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering; Jonathan Page, Professor of Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering at the University of Michigan; Carlos Del Toro, U.S. Secretary of the Navy; Gretchen Whitmer, Governor of Michigan; and other U.S. government officials.
HD Hyundai and Seoul National University agreed to explore educational cooperation with the University of Michigan, including joint research, education, and the introduction of internship programs. They are also considering expanding the scope of cooperation to other U.S. universities such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech).
This agreement was made following Secretary Carlos Del Toro’s visit to HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ Ulsan headquarters in February, where he directly confirmed HD Hyundai’s shipbuilding capabilities and requested cooperation.
Secretary Carlos Del Toro said, "To cultivate competent shipbuilding engineers needed by the nation, cooperation with world-class faculty as well as innovation in ship design education is essential. I am pleased that through this new educational partnership, we can provide American engineers with a valuable opportunity to learn directly at HD Hyundai’s world-class shipyards."
Shin Jong-gye, Technical Advisor of HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, stated, "The Korea-US educational cooperation in the shipbuilding field will not only strengthen the competitiveness of the U.S. shipbuilding industry but also have a positive effect on future visible business cooperation between the two countries, such as U.S. naval vessel MRO. We will strive to play a pivotal role in the development of the shipbuilding industry in both countries based on our technology and experience."
