"Believing 'I will eat at the military base'... Bought 2.7 million won worth of Samgyeopsal and Sirloin, then 'No-show'"

"Not the Only Similar Case... Legal Action Will Be Taken"

A netizen shared a story about suffering damages due to a no-show (failing to appear on the reserved date) after ordering 2.7 million KRW worth of meat for a military unit.

On the 23rd, a netizen named A posted on X (formerly Twitter) about experiencing damages amounting to 2.7 million KRW caused by a no-show. According to the post, A’s store received an order on the 19th from B, who introduced himself as a sergeant in a military unit. At that time, B said, "I was referred and contacted you to purchase meat. I want to buy a large quantity of meat for the military unit."

The person who took the order call was A’s mother, but since her phone had static noise and the sound was unclear, B provided his personal mobile phone number. The next day, on the 20th, B confirmed the meat prices via KakaoTalk message and ordered 40 kg of samgyeopsal (pork belly), 10 kg of moksal (pork neck), and 10 kg of Korean beef sirloin. He planned to pick up the ordered meat around 5 p.m. on the 22nd, two days later.

A’s family prepared the meat according to the order quantity. Especially for the expensive Korean beef, they called B again to reconfirm the items and quantities. However, on the reservation day, the 22nd, B did not show up. When A’s side called B directly, they received a message saying, "My superior didn’t come, so I will leave as soon as he arrives."

However, even after waiting an additional hour, B did not come, and phone calls could not be connected. B’s KakaoTalk account had already blocked A.

A said, "My mother, who has been running a loyal customer business her whole life, probably didn’t think to get a deposit in advance," and added, "It was a large order after a long time, so although we were hesitant, we spent half a day carefully preparing the meat, even scoring it by hand, but in the end, we were tricked by a no-show prank."

He also added, "We are currently considering how to handle the meat that has already been prepared." A said he plans to take legal action against B and shared posts from other self-employed people who suffered similar damages, saying, "It seems he was not alone. It looks like the same guy."

Netizens who read A’s story sent encouragement such as, "Such scammers must be caught," "There are many malicious pranksters these days," and "Please show them the harshness of the law."

Meanwhile, if the no-show act is proven to be intentional, it can be punished as obstruction of business by deception. In the case of obstruction of business, the penalty can be imprisonment for up to 5 years or a fine of up to 15 million KRW.
