Forced Drunk Driving and Causing an Accident
Extorted 31 Million Won Using Report as Pretext
Four individuals who coerced a friend into drunk driving and deliberately caused an accident to extort tens of millions of won have been handed over to the prosecution.
On the 23rd, Yonhap News reported, "The Daejeon Jungbu Police Station arrested and sent two people in their 20s, including Mr. A, on charges of extortion by making a friend drive under the influence and deliberately causing an accident to extort tens of millions of won, while the other two were sent without detention."
Mr. A is accused of conspiring with three other friends to deliberately cause a drunk driving traffic accident with his friend, the victim Mr. B (also in his 20s), with the intent to extort money, and extorted 31 million won from Mr. B.
According to the police, they divided their roles: two, including Mr. A, drank with Mr. B and persuaded him to drive under the influence, while the other two waited in the car and planned to deliberately cause an accident once Mr. B started driving, which they then carried out.
Mr. B, persuaded by phrases like "It's okay to drive" and "There won't be any police checks," got behind the wheel in a heavily intoxicated state around 6:10 a.m. on the 10th of last month in a parking lot of a shopping center in Jung-gu, Daejeon.
Mr. A and his group followed Mr. B’s car as he departed and deliberately collided with Mr. B’s vehicle near the Chungdae Hospital intersection in Daesadong, Jung-gu, Daejeon, causing a minor accident and threatening to report it to the police, thereby extorting 31 million won.
They continued to threaten Mr. B, demanding about 100 million won as a settlement, and eventually, unable to endure the pressure, Mr. B turned himself in to the police, revealing the crime.
A police official stated, "Mr. A planned the crime knowing that his friend Mr. B was usually wealthy and intended to take his money," adding, "The three accomplices who were friends of Mr. A had no prior acquaintance with Mr. B."
