Reid Hoffman and George Soros Father and Son Support Harris
As U.S. President Joe Biden officially announced his decision not to seek re-election, major Democratic donors have consecutively declared their support for Vice President Kamala Harris. On the day following Biden's withdrawal, donations to the Democratic Party reached $50 million (approximately 69.5 billion KRW) in just one day. The Democratic Party is expected to swiftly nominate Vice President Harris as their new presidential candidate, consolidating party strength and formalizing the contest against former President Donald Trump in the election just over three months away.
According to major foreign media on the 22nd (local time), LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman and Wall Street billionaire George Soros and his family expressed their support for Vice President Harris immediately after Biden's withdrawal.
Hoffman, who has donated $8.6 million (about 1.2 billion KRW) to the Biden-Harris campaign so far, stated, "Kamala Harris is the right person at the right time," expressing his support for Vice President Harris.
The Soros family, who donate tens of millions of dollars to the Democratic Party during every election, also joined in supporting Vice President Harris. Alex Soros, George Soros's son, wrote on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), "It is time for all of us to unite around Kamala Harris and defeat Donald Trump," adding, "She is the best and most qualified candidate." George Soros also conveyed his support for Vice President Harris through a spokesperson.
Brad Karp, chairman of the law firm Paul Weiss, also said, "Kamala Harris will be a strong candidate and an excellent president," adding, "I believe she is a dynamic and decisive leader and mediator who will unite our country, heal divisions, and build a better future for all Americans."
With President Biden officially endorsing Vice President Harris as the new Democratic presidential candidate after withdrawing from the race the previous day, senior Democratic lawmakers and donors are rallying around her. One foreign media outlet quoted sources saying that Biden's decision to step down came after Democratic leadership and donors clearly expressed their intention to support Harris as the new candidate to replace him.
Within the Democratic Party, lawmakers such as Elizabeth Warren (Massachusetts) and Amy Klobuchar (Minnesota) have expressed their support for Vice President Harris, standing by her side. Democratic presidential hopefuls including California Governor Gavin Newsom and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer have also joined the ranks supporting Harris. While opinions differ on whether to nominate Harris outright or hold a mini-primary, Harris's frontrunner status is already solidifying within the party.
Donations to the Democratic Party continue to pour in. The Harris campaign announced that it raised $50 million within 24 hours of launching the campaign the previous day. Most of this amount, $49.6 million (about 69 billion KRW), came through ActBlue, the Democratic Party's online fundraising platform, as of 5 a.m. Eastern Time.
Among these, senior Democratic figures such as former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are showing cautious attitudes regarding their support for Vice President Harris. Analysts suggest they are considering factors such as Harris's competitiveness in the general election and the potential to maximize support through an open contest at the Democratic National Convention.
