France Selects 4,000 High-Risk Individuals for Olympic Disruption Concerns

Security Measures Power

Ahead of the opening of the 2024 Paris Olympics, French authorities are intensifying security measures by identifying more than 4,000 individuals who could pose a threat to the event.

Gerald Darmanin, the recently resigned Minister of the Interior, stated on France 2 on the 21st (local time) that after conducting administrative investigations on about one million people related to the Olympics, 4,355 individuals who could threaten Olympic security were identified.

This security check targeted athletes, coaches, journalists, volunteers, private security personnel participating in the Olympics and Paralympics, as well as residents near the venues. Among the 4,355 individuals, 880 are suspected of interfering in domestic affairs, 360 are subject to deportation, and 142 are potential terrorist threats listed on the government’s S-list, according to an Interior Ministry official who spoke to AFP.

The official added that 260 radical Islamists, 186 far-left, and 96 far-right individuals were also included.

French authorities will deploy 30,000 police officers and gendarmes in Paris daily during the Olympics. On days with major events such as the opening ceremony, 45,000 personnel will patrol the streets. Instead of operating at 100% capacity throughout the Olympic period, bonuses will be paid to these personnel. In addition, more than 20,000 private security personnel and about 10,000 military personnel will be mobilized to prevent terrorism.

Airspace security measures will also be implemented on the 26th, the day of the Olympic opening ceremony. From 5:30 PM, all aircraft takeoffs and landings at Paris airports will be prohibited. From 6:30 PM until midnight, when the opening ceremony ends, the airspace within a 150 km radius of Paris will be completely closed.

During this period, the Air Defense and Air Force Operations Command will be responsible for airspace security from the ground and air using long-range radar and other means.
