Heavy Rain Causes Agricultural and Fisheries Damage in Chungnam Approaching 50 Billion Won

Farmers and fishermen in the South Chungcheong region have suffered damages amounting to nearly 50 billion KRW due to heavy rainfall.

According to the provincial government on the 22nd, torrential rains from the 7th to the 10th affected 9,063 farms, damaging 8,498 hectares and resulting in property losses estimated at 49.8 billion KRW.

The province has completed damage assessments for 11,239 cases covering 2,780 hectares, and has provided an initial payment of 50% of the insurance benefits.

Support funds will be distributed differently depending on whether insurance was purchased. Those with insurance will receive up to nearly 100% of the support, while those who did not purchase insurance for eligible items will face penalties.

In four cities and counties, 21 aquaculture farms also suffered property damage totaling approximately 1.1 billion KRW. The province plans to provide disaster relief funds after conducting joint investigations with the cities and counties.

In particular, 918 tons of marine debris flowed into the estuary of the Geumgang River in Seocheon, and up to 50 tons are being collected daily, with the cleanup expected to be completed by the end of this month.

A provincial official stated, "There is no standard for support funds for uninsured crops, so it is difficult for officials to assess the extent of the damage," adding, "We will establish a support system through consultations with cities and counties to ensure swift assistance."
