Eight individuals, including YouTuber A, have been referred to the prosecution for disclosing personal information without consent in connection with the "Miryang Middle School Girl Group Sexual Assault Incident" that occurred 20 years ago in Gyeongnam.
According to the Cyber Investigation Unit of the Gyeongnam Provincial Police Agency on the 22nd, A and others are accused of defaming individuals by posting their real names, photos, and other personal information on platforms such as YouTube and blogs.
This case involved 44 high school students in the Miryang area who sexually assaulted a middle school girl over the course of a year in 2004.
Only 10 perpetrators were brought to trial, 20 were sent to juvenile detention centers, and the rest either reached settlements with the victim or were not included in the complaint, resulting in no prosecution due to loss of indictment rights.
The case regained attention early last month when a YouTube channel disclosed the identities of those alleged to be perpetrators, and other YouTubers and bloggers joined in revealing the suspected offenders' information, sparking controversy over "private sanctions."
In response, those involved in the videos filed complaints against the YouTubers and bloggers.
According to the provincial police agency, as of the 19th, there have been 469 petitions and reports related to the case, with 192 individuals under investigation.
During this process, eight individuals were referred to the prosecution, while 11 were not booked as the allegations against them were not substantiated.
The provincial police agency plans to continue investigating the remaining subjects in accordance with established procedures.
