Foreign Media: "Biden's Resignation, a Shocking Decision... Victory for Voters"

"Strong Pressure from the Democratic Party... Changed Mind on Saturday Night"
"Concerns Over Global Impact of Chaos Originating from the US"

On the 21st (local time), when U.S. President Joe Biden announced his withdrawal from the Democratic presidential race, major foreign media outlets simultaneously reported the news, drawing significant attention. In particular, they are closely monitoring the potential impact on the future U.S. presidential primary landscape, financial markets, and international affairs.

Major foreign media outlets reported Biden's withdrawal statement, which he announced around 1:46 p.m. Eastern Time via his X (formerly Twitter) account, as a one-line breaking news item and featured it as a top story on their homepages. Leading outlets such as ABC, CNN, The New York Times (NYT), and the Associated Press (AP) have set up live pages on their main sites, posting real-time articles related to Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.

ABC explained, "President Biden’s decision to withdraw came under strong pressure from Democratic Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and more than 30 Democratic House members." Political news outlet Politico reported, "Late Saturday evening, after discussions with two of his closest aides, Biden changed his mind," adding, "According to five sources, the Biden campaign conducted its own polling, which showed that the prospect of victory in November had disappeared."

The Washington Post (WP) described Biden’s decision as a "shocking decision," stating, "With Biden’s decision, the Democratic Party faces an unprecedented challenge of selecting a new candidate at the last moment."

The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) said, "Voters have defeated President Biden," and explained, "Although his decision to quit the presidential race was reluctant, it was made in the national interest."

Many foreign media outlets view Vice President Kamala Harris as the likely candidate to continue the presidential race following Biden’s withdrawal. Articles analyzing Harris’s background, the endorsements she has received, and her future campaign strategy are appearing one after another. However, the possibility of a third candidate emerging is also being discussed.

CNN reported, "According to conversations with several Democratic figures, some Democratic presidential candidates are watching to see what happens next and are assessing how united the party will be around Vice President Harris." The AP noted, "After President Biden’s withdrawal, the Democratic Party is rallying around Vice President Harris," but also analyzed that "the power dynamics remain fluid."

Interest in Biden’s withdrawal is high overseas as well. British media such as the BBC, Sky News, and The Telegraph have issued breaking news and set up live pages. The BBC explained, "The race to the White House has been overturned," attributing it to "intense pressure within the Democratic Party over the past few weeks following Biden’s poor performance in debates against former President Donald Trump."

Japanese media are also closely watching the situation. The Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Nikkei) expressed concern, saying, "The decision came too late and has given momentum to former President Trump, who aims to return to the White House," and warned, "If the Democratic Party does not unite under Vice President Harris, chaos originating from the U.S. could spread worldwide."
