LH Issues Construction Contract for New Hangang Bridge ‘Suseokdaegyo’

1km, 4-Lane Han River Crossing Bridge Connecting Namyangju Suseok-dong and Hanam Misa-dong to Be Newly Built

Road Route Designated and Construction Ordered via Turnkey Method to Shorten Project Duration

Boost to 3rd New Town Metropolitan Transportation Project Advancement

Korea Land and Housing Corporation (LH) announced on the 21st that it issued a construction order on the 19th for the tentative ‘Suseok Bridge (Hangang Bridge),’ one of the major metropolitan transportation measures connecting Namyangju City and Hanam City in the 3rd New Town project. Suseok Bridge is a 1km-long, 4-lane Hangang River crossing bridge connecting Suseok-dong, Namyangju City (Gangbyeonbuk-ro) and Misa-dong, Hanam City (Misa Riverside Road).

Since being announced as part of the 3rd New Town metropolitan transportation network in December 2018, it went through 17 resident meetings, briefings, and expert discussions, and was finalized in December 2020 as part of the Namyangju Wangsuk and Wangsuk2 metropolitan transportation improvement plan. In June 2022, LH applied to Gyeonggi Province for road route designation.

After the designation application, Hanam City expressed concerns about increased traffic congestion on Olympic-daero and infringement on learning and residential rights, requesting either relocation toward Gangdong Bridge or a complete reconsideration considering the undergrounding of the Pangyo-Toegyewon Metropolitan Area 1st Ring Expressway.

Meanwhile, Namyangju City warned that if the installation of Suseok Bridge is delayed, a traffic crisis is expected for the 68,000 households in the Wangsuk and Wangsuk2 New Towns, making project promotion inevitable, showing a tense difference in positions between the local governments.

Accordingly, LH led the road route designation through continuous consultations between the two local governments and a decision by Gyeonggi Province, on the condition that Hanam City agrees to directly connect with Misa Riverside Road, newly construct a connection to Misa IC, and elevate the Garaeyeoul Intersection on the Gangil bypass road. With a solution for Suseok Bridge in place, LH plans to issue the construction order simultaneously with the road route designation to make up for the previously delayed project period.

Suseok Bridge will be issued under a 'turnkey method,' which combines design and construction bidding to shorten the project period, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport’s review of large-scale construction bidding methods. The estimated construction cost is approximately 380.1 billion KRW, with the main bridge about 1km long and connecting roads totaling 3.3km. The bridge type can be freely proposed by bidders. It is planned as a 4-lane road, but the bridge width will be determined to allow lane number changes in consideration of future direct connection to Misa Riverside Road and increased traffic demand.
