Lee Jae-myung: "Incheon, a Place That Embraced Me Like a Mother's Arms... 'Basic Society' Is Our Future"

Democratic Party National Member Convention Party Leader Candidate Speech

Lee Jae-myung, the Democratic Party of Korea's presidential candidate, asserted on the 20th that "'Basic Society' must be our future." He emphasized that the fundamental conditions of people's lives, such as income, housing, healthcare, and education, should be recognized as rightful entitlements.

On the afternoon of the same day, at the 1st National Party Members' Convention held at Namdong Gymnasium in Incheon, Lee said, "'Muksanism,' which addresses the people's livelihood issues, is the most important political ideology and doctrine, isn't it?"

He explained, "The economy grows on rationality and fairness nurtured in a stable environment," adding, "We must create more opportunities through recovery and sustainability of growth to nurture our hopes."

Lee stated, "Maximized productivity will bring revolutionary changes," and warned, "Excess profits beyond an appropriate level and jobs taken by robots will reduce income and consumption, damaging the normal circulation of the economy."

He also shared his reflections on Incheon. Lee said, "Incheon warmly embraced me, Lee Jae-myung, who fell into despair after the 2022 presidential election defeat, like a mother's arms, and it is truly a hometown-like place that helped me stand up firmly again."

Lee emphasized, "A society where the basic conditions of people's lives such as income, housing, healthcare, and education are recognized as rightful entitlements ? a basic society ? must be our future," and raised his voice, saying, "Whether high productivity leads to destructive polarization and systemic crisis through cutthroat competition and winner-takes-all, or whether it leads to a community of mutual care and restraint with sustainable growth depends on our choices and preparations."

He then appealed, "We must build a stronger national party, a more competent ruling party, a future-oriented Democratic Party that creates an era change beyond regime change, and a trustworthy people's party that citizens can rely on. Please give me one more chance. I will unite the pride and passion of 2.5 million Democratic Party members and develop the party more firmly into a democratic mass party centered on its members."
