On the 19th (local time), President Biden stated in a press release, "We can and will defeat Trump at the polls," adding, "I look forward to returning to the campaign trail next week." He is currently recovering at his Delaware residence after testing positive for COVID-19 during the campaign.

Biden's declaration of intent to resume campaigning appears to be an effort to reject the pressure urging him to withdraw from the race.

Jen O'Malley Dillon, Biden's campaign manager, also appeared on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" that day, reiterating the president's commitment to finishing the race. O'Malley Dillon said, "As the president himself has mentioned multiple times, he is running to win, and he is our candidate."

The Biden campaign also released a memo stating that there are "no plans for an alternative candidate."

However, separate from these public responses, reports suggest that President Biden is taking the situation seriously internally and is contemplating his future course of action.

The New York Times (NYT) reported, "Publicly, both President Biden and the campaign remain steadfast," but "internally, they are listening more seriously to calls for withdrawal."

Democratic Senator Chris Coons, co-chair of the campaign, also stated at the Aspen Security Forum that "President Biden is considering who would be the best candidate to win the November election."

NBC reported that Biden’s family members, who have been persuading him to continue, have also begun discussions regarding his possible withdrawal.

Within the Democratic Party, voices calling for President Biden to withdraw from the race continued on the same day. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Majority Leader Hakeem Jeffries both conveyed to President Biden that withdrawal is inevitable.

The number of lawmakers demanding Biden’s withdrawal has risen to 34, including Senator Sherrod Brown from Ohio and Representative Gabe Vasquez from New Mexico.

Within the Democratic Party, there are signs of efforts to reorganize the campaign with the expectation that Vice President Kamala Harris will succeed Biden as the candidate. Political news outlet Politico reported that some key Democratic donors have started fundraising efforts for Vice President Harris.

According to a survey conducted by the Associated Press and the University of Chicago’s National Research Center (NRC) from the 11th to the 15th, involving 1,253 American adults, six out of ten Democratic supporters predicted that Vice President Harris would perform well as a presidential candidate.
