Vietnam's 'Top Power Rank' Nguyen Phu Trong, Communist Party Secretary-General, Passes Away

Nguyen Phu Trong, the top-ranking power figure in Vietnam and General Secretary of the Communist Party, has passed away, according to local state media. He was 80 years old.

On the 19th (local time), local state media VN Express reported that General Secretary Trong passed away that afternoon, citing old age and serious illness as the cause of death. The Central Committee of the Communist Party of Vietnam and others are expected to announce a special notice regarding General Secretary Trong's state funeral.

General Secretary Trong served as Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee for six years from January 2000 to June 2006, and then served as Chairman of the National Assembly from June 2006 to July 2011.

He was first elected as General Secretary at the Party Central Committee in 2011. He was re-elected in 2016 and again in 2021, becoming the longest-serving General Secretary since the end of the Vietnam War in 1975.
