Daegu District Prosecutors Seek 20-Year Prison Sentence
The prosecution has requested a 20-year prison sentence for a woman in her 40s who threw her 11-month-old nephew out of a high-rise apartment, resulting in his death.
According to the Criminal Division 1 of the Daegu District Court Western Branch (Presiding Judge Do Jeongwon) on the 19th, the prosecution requested the court to sentence Ms. A (42), who was indicted and detained on murder charges, to 20 years in prison, require the attachment of an electronic location tracking device for 10 years, and place her under probation for 5 years.
Ms. A is accused of visiting her younger sibling's home in Daegu with her parents on Parents' Day, May 8, and then throwing her 11-month-old nephew, referred to as B, out of the window from the 24th floor of the apartment, causing his death.
The prosecution asked the court to consider the fact that she selected her young nephew as the target of a meticulous and premeditated crime, that she had a history of mental illness but worsened her symptoms by failing to take her medication after discharge, that B's mother is appealing for a severe punishment, and that there is a high possibility of other victims in the future.
Ms. A, who has a history of psychiatric hospitalization, reportedly became delusional after discharge, believing that her family would kill her nephew painfully, and decided to kill B to prevent him from living a miserable life.
On the day of the crime, Ms. A had even prepared a weapon but changed her method out of fear of being discovered. She told her mother, who was caring for her nephew in a small room, "I want to hold him too." When her mother briefly left the room, Ms. A locked the door and committed the crime.
Ms. A, who was arrested at the scene, immediately confessed to the crime. In her final statement, she said, "I'm sorry."
