Embezzlement of 1 Billion Won from 63 People
A voice phishing gang member who impersonated an investigator from the Supreme Prosecutors' Office and embezzled more than 1 billion won was sentenced to four years in prison.

On the 20th, Judge Kim Seon-beom of the Criminal Division 7 at the Seoul Northern District Court announced that A (27), who was indicted on charges of fraud and criminal organization activities, was sentenced to four years in prison.
A was charged with embezzling more than 1 billion won from 63 victims while working in a voice phishing organization run by ethnic Koreans from China between 2017 and 2019.
A was found to have deceived victims by impersonating an investigator from the Supreme Prosecutors' Office, saying, "The account is involved in a crime, and it is necessary to verify whether the money deposited in the account is criminal funds. If you withdraw all the money in the account under your name and hand it over to a Financial Supervisory Service employee, the money will be checked and returned."
The organization posted advertisements such as "Looking for high-income part-time jobs" and assured those who contacted them that working in China guaranteed high income, providing airfare and recruiting them as new members. It was revealed that the organization’s managers even resorted to violence if members disobeyed or resisted.
The court stated the sentencing rationale, saying, "The defendant clearly recognized from the beginning that the crime was voice phishing, and the revealed damage alone exceeds 1 billion won. The defendant has not been forgiven by the victims, and it is doubtful whether he tried to quit during the crime."
