Cammsys announced on the 19th that its corporate-affiliated CM Research Institute has been designated as a ‘2024 First Half Excellent Corporate Research Institute’ selected by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
The Excellent Corporate Research Institute designation system was introduced in 2017 to enhance the competitiveness and qualitative growth of corporate-affiliated research institutes, which form the foundation of corporate research and development (R&D). It targets small and medium-sized enterprises and mid-sized companies in manufacturing and service sectors that demonstrate outstanding R&D capabilities and excellent technological innovation activities. From the date of designation confirmation, benefits such as government awards, additional points in national R&D projects, and preferential treatment as military service exemption companies are provided for three years. The host organization is the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the entrusted organization is the Korea Industrial Technology Association.
In the first half of this year, 24 corporate-affiliated research institutes, including Cammsys CM Research Institute, were designated as excellent corporate research institutes. At the award ceremony held on the 18th, Lee Chang-yoon, the 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, attended and encouraged the future development of the designated research institutes.
Cammsys CM Research Institute was recognized for its camera module technology and R&D capabilities, having been first designated in 2021 and re-designated in the first half of this year. The CM Research Institute holds a total of 60 technology patents (39 registered, 21 pending). Cammsys holds a total of 164 patents (134 registered, 30 pending). The company actively encourages patent applications by operating an employee invention compensation system. The company analyzed that receiving the Excellent Corporate Invention Certification for four consecutive times since 2015 positively contributed to this Excellent Corporate Research Institute designation.
The most notable achievement was the commercialization performance of technology development. Cammsys has continuously secured orders for front and rear camera modules of major models from the early series to recent new products of global smartphone brands and possesses advanced manufacturing technology related to this. In non-mobile fields, it is developing camera solutions applicable in various areas such as home appliances, medical, security, military, and MR (mixed reality). In particular, for AI cameras for home appliances and AI facial recognition cameras for security, Cammsys has developed everything from related algorithms to NPU (neural processing unit) hardware and platforms, demonstrating robust on-device AI competitiveness.
Kwon Hyun-jin, CEO of Cammsys, stated, “Based on the technology and R&D capabilities that have dominated the smartphone camera module market, we are focusing on securing future growth engines such as bio-sensor modules, AI system cameras, smart IoT tags, and ultrasonic battery diagnosis systems,” adding, “We will continue R&D activities to lead the market in the future.”
