Mapo-gu Wins 2024 Korea Land Grand Prize Korean Landscape Society President's Award

Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) announced on July 18 that it achieved the great honor of receiving the Korean Landscape Society President's Award at the '2024 Korea Land Grand Prize' hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport.

Now in its 16th year, the Korea Land Grand Prize is a prestigious event that evaluates and awards beautifully maintained land, urban, and landscape cases under the slogan "Elegant Land, Beautiful Landscape."

Mapo-gu won the award in the "Cultural Landscape Category" for the "Nanji Theme Tourism Forest Trail and Seongjung-gil Healing Theme Walkway."

The "Seongjung-gil Healing Theme Walkway" is a place where 20-meter-tall Metasequoia trees along the path create a magnificent view. Just a year ago, this area was a space of concern for safety accidents due to a narrow 1-meter-wide pedestrian path and deteriorated slopes.

In response, Mapo-gu sought ways to ensure safety while preserving and utilizing the natural Metasequoia vegetation, constructing a deck road and widening the pedestrian path to a maximum of 8 meters. Old stairs and slopes were also refurbished to allow even the mobility-impaired to walk comfortably.

The "Nanji Theme Tourism Forest Trail" is also a theme street created with a nature-friendly walking environment, receiving favorable reviews from residents.

To soothe the pain of Nanji-do, known as the "Garbage Mountain," and to restore the original meaning of Nanji-do as an island beautiful with "orchids" and "wildflowers," Mapo-gu planted 11 species of herbaceous plants including red spider lilies, Lycoris radiata, and Liriope muscari to create the "Nanji Theme Tourism Forest Trail."

Along with this, over 50 poems and sculptures are exhibited, and various festivals are held, transforming Nanji-do into a space where flowers, poetry, and music flow throughout the year.

Encouraged by this award, Mapo-gu plans to further focus on creating beautiful landscapes so that residents can feel the value of nature in their daily lives.

Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, "I am very pleased and honored that the projects we have cultivated for residents' leisure and safety have achieved remarkable results," adding, "We will continue to create more healing spaces within the city to improve residents' quality of life."
