'Sister-in-law's Wedding Gift' Wife Spent 18.5 Million Won... Husband Asks, "Am I the Strange One?"

A husband's complaint about not being able to understand his wife spending 18.5 million won on a wedding gift for his sister-in-law is becoming a hot topic online.

On the 15th, a post titled "A 18 million won wedding gift for my sister-in-law?" was uploaded on an online community, where the author expressed, "Something beyond my common sense happened, and I'm curious about what others think." The writer, Mr. A, who married his wife three years ago and is raising a 2-year-old child, wrote, "My sister-in-law is getting married in October, and my wife said she would give her a few large home appliances as gifts."

'Sister-in-law's Wedding Gift' Wife Spent 18.5 Million Won... Husband Asks, "Am I the Strange One?"

The problem arose after the wife went to look at home appliances to gift to her sister-in-law. Mr. A explained, "On July 13th, she said she was going to look at appliances, so I gave her my card." This was because the wife's card had only 2 million won left as the monthly limit. However, that afternoon, 18.5 million won was charged at an appliance store.

Mr. A wrote, "Isn't that amount too excessive for just a few large home appliances?" He added, "I didn't set a specific amount, but my standard was about 5 to 6 million won, and even if it was a lot, I thought it would be around 7 to 8 million won." He asked, "Is my standard far below the general standard?"

He continued, "My wife insists, 'Didn't we agree to buy a few large home appliances?'" and lamented, "We never discussed in advance what to buy or the approximate price range." He said, "I have no intention of telling my sister-in-law or my wife's family," but added, "Since she said she would buy it anyway, I could just let it go, but I'm angry at my wife's attitude. Who do you think is at fault?"

Netizens who saw this responded with comments such as, "Since the delivery hasn't arrived yet, just cancel the card," "Even as a woman, I don't understand this," "You should have agreed on this amount beforehand," "Charging that amount without prior discussion is unacceptable," and "What did the sister-in-law do for you when you got married?"

Meanwhile, according to a recent 'Marriage Cost Report' by the matchmaking company Duo, which surveyed 1,000 newlyweds married within the last two years, the total wedding cost for newlyweds is about 297.48 million won, with the cost of wedding gifts averaging 15.64 million won. Considering this survey result, Mr. A's wife gave her sister-in-law wedding gifts exceeding the average cost. Other specific expenses included the newlywed home at 242.99 million won, wedding hall 12.83 million won, wedding presents 7.58 million won, honeymoon 7.25 million won, wedding rings 6.73 million won, wedding package (studio, dress, makeup) 3.6 million won, and ceremonial food 860,000 won.
