"Active Support to Revitalize the Local Nuclear Power Industry"
On the 18th, Hong Nam-pyo, Mayor of Changwon Special City in Gyeongnam, commented on the successful export of nuclear power plants to the Czech Republic, saying, "We welcome the entry of Korea's nuclear power technology into the European market together with one million citizens. Although there were several obstacles until we were selected as the preferred bidder for the new nuclear power plant, this achievement, made possible after 15 years through the combined efforts of both the public and private sectors, deserves a big round of applause. We also express our gratitude to the central government for its unwavering support in making this possible."
The exact scale of the contract for the Czech large-scale nuclear power plant construction project is expected to be finalized after the contract is officially signed in March 2025. However, the local nuclear industry is expressing optimism, stating that this news of nuclear power plant exports?the first in 15 years since the Barakah project in the United Arab Emirates?signals not just recovery but a sign of revival.
Changwon Special City is a hub of Korea's nuclear power industry, with manufacturing capabilities concentrated here, including Doosan Enerbility, the nation's only nuclear power equipment manufacturer, and other related companies. The city expects that this nuclear power plant export will significantly alleviate the concerns of local companies about securing future orders, serving as a positive signal for investment and employment in the region. In addition, this achievement, which comes in the year marking the 50th anniversary of the National Industrial Complex, is expected to present a major opportunity for local businesses.
Mayor Hong said, "We sincerely welcome Team Korea's selection as the preferred bidder for the Czech nuclear power plant project. However, since the contract will be finalized and construction is expected to begin in 2029, it will take considerable time before direct orders are placed with local companies. In the meantime, the city will spare no effort in supporting nuclear power companies so they can endure until then."
He also stated, "In line with the government's policy to revitalize the nuclear industry by establishing a global SMR manufacturing cluster in the Changwon and Gyeongnam regions, we will continue to make our utmost efforts."
