The creation of the Jeollado Millennium Historical and Cultural Garden is a project commemorating the millennium of Jeollado’s founding, jointly promoted by Jeollanam-do and Naju City.
By 2026, the project will be carried out in phases, including the 'Millennium Hanmadang,' an outdoor plaza and garden around Geumseonggwan, a cultural asset symbolizing the thousand-year-old Naju-mok; the 'Millennium History Hall,' an exhibition and experience space through remodeling the Naju-mok Culture Center; and the construction of the 'Ohhyang Hall,' where visitors can experience Jeollado’s five flavors (tea, books, taste, beauty, and sound).
The old Naju Theater, the first theater building in the Naju area in the 1930s, was selected as a cultural regeneration project site by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2022 and is planned to be developed into a complex cultural space for exhibitions and arts.
The theater will house a Naju Theater archive exhibition space and a media art performance hall, which have shared the joys and sorrows of local residents, and is scheduled to open in the second half of 2025.
A city official said, “We hope for active interest and participation from residents in this urban revitalization project utilizing Jeollado’s millennium history and Naju’s modern and contemporary cultural resources. We will do our best to actively listen to residents’ opinions, which are the foundation for the project’s success, so that it can serve as a cultural tourism hub representing Naju.”
