U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris launched an offensive on the 17th (local time) against Republican vice presidential candidate Senator J.D. Vance, who will face her in the upcoming November election.
In a 45-second video released online that day, Vice President Harris criticized Senator Vance, saying, "Donald Trump has found a new running mate who will be a 'rubber stamp' for his extreme agenda."
A rubber stamp refers to a person who blindly approves and follows someone else's opinions or decisions.
Vice President Harris warned voters, "Do not be mistaken," adding, "Vance will be loyal not to our country, but only to Trump." She further argued that Vance's support for abortion restrictions, refusal to accept the results of the last presidential election, and opposition to current government policies such as Medicare pose potential threats.
The political media outlet The Hill analyzed that Harris's offensive came as Senator Vance was scheduled to deliver his acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention that night.
The Hill cited sources saying that Vice President Harris and Senator Vance had a brief and polite phone conversation the day before. After exchanging initial greetings, they quickly ended the call.
Earlier, on the 15th, after Senator Vance was selected as former President Trump's running mate, Vice President Harris reportedly called Vance, but he did not answer. At that time, Harris left a message congratulating Vance on his nomination and expressing hope to meet in the vice presidential debate proposed by CBS News.
Previously, CBS News proposed a debate between the vice presidential candidates of both parties to be held at a Washington D.C. studio on either July 23 or August 13. Vice President Harris accepted the debate, but Senator Vance's side has yet to announce a specific position.
