Daegu City Council Member Lee Dongwook Urges Prompt Opening of Samsung Sanghoe and Cheil Mojik Memorial and Exhibition Halls

"Samsung Industrial Heritage Should Be Publicized"
Request Made During 5-Minute Free Speech at Temporary Assembly

Lee Dongwook, a member of the Daegu Metropolitan Council (People Power Party, Buk-gu 5), stated during a five-minute free speech at the 2nd plenary session of the 310th temporary meeting on the 17th, "Daegu City must create an environment that encourages Samsung to actively invest in Daegu, and Samsung also needs to show affection and interest for Daegu, its founding city."

Lee Dongwook began his speech by saying, "In modern society, the influence of corporations goes beyond the economic sphere and even changes the image and identity of a city," and added, "Daegu, as the birthplace of Samsung Group, aimed to honor the entrepreneurial spirit of Hoam Lee Byungchul by establishing the Daegu Samsung Creative Campus."

He further explained, "Within the Samsung Zone at the Samsung Creative Campus, industrial heritage sites related to Samsung's founding legend?such as the Cheil Industries Dormitory Exhibition Hall, Cheil Industries Memorial Hall, Samsung Sanghoe, and the Hoam Statue?have been restored and are on display," expressing concern that "after Chairman Lee Byungchul's passing, the decrease in Samsung Group's investments and a series of misfortunes involving the Samsung family have hindered the role of the Samsung Zone."

Lee Dongwook continued, "It is certainly a source of pride that Daegu is the cradle of Samsung, but it is regrettable that the city has not fully utilized this fact," and emphasized, "Discovering content related to Samsung and developing it as a tourism resource will enhance Daegu's status and promote the city brand. Daegu City should work with Samsung to ensure that the exhibition halls in the Samsung Zone can open as soon as possible."

He also stated, "If the 'Economic Myth Walking Trail,' which has been operated by Buk-gu, Daegu since 2021, is revitalized through the opening of the Samsung Zone, it will become a differentiated industrial tourism content."

Finally, Lee Dongwook concluded, "The Samsung Creative Campus is included as a startup hub within the Urban Convergence Special Zone, and if the memorial and exhibition halls in the Samsung Zone open and become active in various ways, it will have a positive impact on the designation of the special zone," and urged, "I hope Daegu City will actively create an environment so that Samsung can proactively invest in and contribute to Daegu."
