Pitch Instability and Inability to Hit High Notes Lead to 'Worst National Anthem Performance'
"I Will Enter Alcohol Addiction Treatment Facility"
In the 2024 Major League Baseball (MLB) Home Run Derby, a singer who sparked controversy for the 'worst national anthem performance' apologized, stating that she was intoxicated at the time.
According to local media on the 16th (local time), American country singer-songwriter Ingrid Andress (32) sang the national anthem before the Home Run Derby event held on the evening of the 15th at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. She repeatedly missed the pitch, struggled to hit high notes, and pronounced words inaccurately, making it difficult to continue singing.
A video capturing this performance spread online, leading to a wave of criticism. Netizens responded with comments such as "She should never be allowed to sing again," "Our ears were assaulted by her singing," "Sounds like something drunks would sing at a local bar," and "Is she really a Grammy nominee?" Alongside criticism of her vocal ability, controversy over her alcohol consumption also arose.
As the controversy grew, Andress admitted to drinking. She stated on X (formerly Twitter) that day, "I will not lie to you. I was drunk last night." She added, "That was not me last night. I apologize to MLB, all the fans, and the country I love," and announced, "I will enter a treatment facility to get the help I need for alcohol addiction." The MLB office has not issued any comment regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, Andress gained recognition after appearing on a TV audition program in 2010, worked as a songwriter, and officially debuted with her first album in 2020. She has stood out in the country music scene, including being nominated for the Grammy Best New Artist award the following year. She is also the daughter of former MLB coach Brad Andress.
