Kim Gyun-ho, Gwangju Seo-gu Council Member, Reflects on Two Years of Legislative Service

Kim Kyun-ho, a member of the Seo-gu District Council in Gwangju Metropolitan City, delivered a 5-minute free speech titled “Reflecting on the Past Two Years of Legislative Life” at the 1st plenary session of the 324th extraordinary meeting on the 16th.

Councilor Kim began his remarks by declaring, “I hereby declare a break from old-fashioned politics, factional politics, collusive politics, and legislative practices that disappoint politics.” He continued, “When I asked myself whether I have been ‘honest and confident’ and could proudly say I have done well during the past two years of legislative activities, the answer was ‘No.’ Two years ago, in my first ‘5-minute free speech,’ I emphasized the need for communication, cooperation, and harmony. What do the council members think now?”

Councilor Kim stated, “I will no longer engage in behaviors such as badmouthing fellow councilors behind their backs, breaking promises and trust to extend my own power, or flattering politics. We must undergo a complete transformation. I also reflect on myself for having tolerated and neglected improper actions under the guise of ‘forgiveness.’”

He added, “We will reduce situations where excessive demands for data submission and catering to councilors’ whims cause the executive branch to neglect its core duties. I will respect public officials and treat them with humility. I will strive to focus together on our fundamental role for the residents of Seo-gu. The council will also continuously check and monitor whether there are any problems or unfairness.”

In conclusion, he emphasized, “I ask my fellow councilors to boldly break away from the old customs and practices of colluding among themselves to push through their own complaints. Please respect your fellow councilors regardless of age or experience.” He finished his 5-minute free speech by saying, “I look forward to the second half of the 9th Seo-gu Council improving through deep reflection by all of us, and I pledge to take the lead in the next two years of legislative work.”
