Animal Freedom Alliance points out "Animal abuse at a serious level"

A case occurred where elementary school students in their early teens abused and killed a cat by flicking it on the forehead and sitting on it.

On the 16th, Animal Freedom Coalition revealed a recent cat abuse incident that took place in Daejeon on social media (SNS). According to the post, two 12-year-old elementary students trespassed into a friend's house in Daejeon without permission and killed the pet cat. The two students had previously learned the house password and secretly entered the home. On the day of the incident, they took turns kicking the kitten and, as if enjoying its pain, sat on it, according to the Animal Freedom Coalition. A representative of the organization said, "They caused the death of the pet cat by flicking its forehead."

A parent who reported the incident said, "On a day when I came home earlier than usual, I found two unfamiliar students in the house, and the pet cat, which had been healthy before leaving the house, was lying with its tongue out." The organization stated, "The victim's guardian has received an apology from the parents of the offending students and has withdrawn the complaint," adding, "It is very regrettable that such a horrific crime committed by the offending students was handled lightly." They also said, "Korean society still has no concrete measures against juvenile animal abuse crimes," and "We want to inform citizens that animal abuse crimes by young students are at a serious level." The incident was also reported to the school, where a disciplinary committee was held, and the two students were punished.

In Songdo, a pet dog was thrown out the window

Additionally, in Songdo, a 9-year-old elementary student visiting the reporter's child's house threw a pet dog out the window, causing its death. At the time, the elementary student who killed the dog was playing in the room with the reporter's child as usual. Then, the reporter realized that the pet dog, named 'Eve,' was missing. After searching for a while, the child’s friend said, "Eve is in the flower bed," and the reporter hurried to the first floor. There, Eve was lying in the flower bed, writhing in pain. Eve was whining, and when the reporter picked her up to take her to the hospital, she soon stopped breathing.

Later, the child’s friend confessed to throwing Eve out of the veranda. When asked why, the child gave a shocking answer: "I don't know." The Animal Freedom Coalition stated, "Since the offender in the Songdo case is under 10 years old, they are not subject to criminal punishment under criminal law, so the investigation was closed. However, the victim family, who suffered the loss of a family member, is preparing a civil lawsuit to hold the offender accountable for their actions."

Netizens who read the story responded with comments such as, "I am really furious," "Age doesn't matter when it comes to handling life," "What do they not know? At 9 years old, they should know everything. Animal abuse is truly abnormal," and "Animal abuse can be the start of a major crime. I think children and their parents should be made aware of the seriousness of the situation and be required to receive psychiatric treatment."
