University students on summer break are immersing themselves in the excitement of learning and sharing artificial intelligence (AI) technology, even amid the monsoon season and heat waves.
The main participants in this enthusiastic endeavor are about 90 students from universities participating in the Ministry of Education's Advanced AI Innovation Convergence University Consortium, as well as students from universities collaborating in this project.
More than 90 university students from nine universities nationwide are attentively attending lectures at the "AI Innovation Convergence University Summer Vacation AI Education Camp" hosted by Yeungjin College.
They are taking part in the "2024 AI Innovation Convergence University Summer Vacation AI Education Camp and Competition," which is being held at the Yeungjin College Global Campus for five days and four nights until the 19th.
The students have formed 23 teams and are using the "Modi Mast Kit," a modular assembly teaching aid for SW and AI education. By combining Lego modules through coding, they practice the fundamentals of AI, enhancing their software understanding and creativity.
Now in its third year, the AI Education Camp is hosted by AI COSS and organized by the Yeungjin College AI COSS Project Group. Compared to last year, the number of participating students has increased significantly, helping to achieve the project's goal of spreading its impact.
The AI Education Camp includes nine universities: Chonnam National University, Yeungjin College, Kyungpook National University, Sungkyunkwan University, University of Seoul, SeoulTech, as well as collaborating universities such as Hanyang Women's University, Geoje College, and Yeonam Institute of Technology.
Professors and researchers from the consortium and collaborating universities are also participating in the camp, operating the AI basic practice course developed by the project group as an extracurricular program and facilitating credit exchanges between universities.
At the camp orientation on the 15th, Yeungjin College's Head of Computer Information Department, Professor Lim Deokseong, and the university's AI COSS Project Group Director, Professor Kim Jongkyu, along with professors and officials from each university, attended to welcome and encourage the participating students.
Kim Sangjun, a first-year student in the Computer Information Department at Yeungjin College, who is participating in the camp, said, "This is a great camp where students from various universities can learn and exchange AI technology, build friendships and camaraderie, and showcase teamwork through presentations. I'm really looking forward to it."
On the 19th, the camp will conclude with team presentations and evaluations of their projects. Ten teams will be selected to receive scholarships totaling 4.6 million KRW, with gold, silver, excellence, and bronze awards, before completing the program.
Kim Jongkyu, Director of the Yeungjin College AI COSS Project Group, who is in charge of the camp, said, "Despite the hot weather and summer break, I hope that the students participating in the camp will enhance their expertise in the AI field and lay the foundation for growth through exchanges with students from other universities."
Meanwhile, Yeungjin College is participating in three innovative convergence university projects in the advanced fields designated by the Ministry of Education: "Artificial Intelligence," "Intelligent Robotics," and, as of last year, "Semiconductor Materials, Parts, and Equipment," the most among all vocational colleges nationwide.
