Yangcheon-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Gi-jae) is commencing the reconstruction of aging neighborhood community centers that are over 30 years old.

On the 17th, Yangcheon-gu announced that as the first step in its plan to rebuild seven aging neighborhood offices, it held a residents' briefing session on the 16th for the Sinjeong 2-dong Community Center, which is the oldest, having been in use for 35 years.

The existing Sinjeong 2-dong community center was built in 1989 and had become outdated and cramped. Additionally, the site included national land owned by the National Police Agency, which made land utilization difficult. Since the 8th mayoral term, the district has actively negotiated multiple times with the National Police Agency and Yangcheon Police Station to secure the land, successfully acquiring the national land (Sinjeong 2 Police Center, 165㎡) in March.

According to the new design plan, the new Sinjeong 2-dong community center will be constructed with a total area of 660㎡, combining the existing 495㎡ community center and the 165㎡ Sinjeong 2 Police Center. It will have a total floor area of 2,511㎡, spanning from two basement floors to five above-ground floors.

The new community center will include a civil service office, a book caf?, a residents' autonomy program room, a large auditorium, a neighborhood headquarters, and a rooftop garden. In addition, the district completed reconstruction guidelines last January for six other community centers that have been in use for over 30 years and are outdated (Mok 1·4-dong, Sinwol 1·2-dong, Sinjeong 6·7-dong) and is currently working on detailed plans.

Mok 1-dong has completed preliminary administrative procedures for relocation and reconstruction and is preparing for the central investment review. Sinwol 1-dong has completed preliminary administrative procedures such as shared property review and Seoul city investment review and is awaiting Seoul city public architecture review. Sinwol 2-dong is establishing construction plans and preparing for the Seoul city investment review.

Mayor Lee Gi-jae said, “We will proceed swiftly and meticulously, reflecting the urgency of reconstructing aging neighborhood community centers and the wishes of residents. We will spare no effort to ensure that the reconstruction projects of neighborhood community centers, which are the heart of the local community, proceed smoothly so that residents can receive high-quality public services and living infrastructure.”
