Samsung Electronics Receives International Certification for 'Mobile Robot Safety Software Framework' Standard

Received 'IEC 61508·ISO 13849' Certification from International Certification Body DNV

Samsung Electronics announced on the 17th that its self-developed 'Safety Software Framework for Mobile Robots' has become the first in Korea to simultaneously obtain international certifications 'IEC 61508' and 'ISO 13849' from the international certification body DNV (Det Norske Veritas).

'IEC 61508' is an international standard established by the IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) that includes requirements to ensure safety throughout the entire process of design, development, verification, and maintenance according to the SIL (Safety Integrity Level). 'ISO 13849' is an international standard defined by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) that specifies safety requirements for safety-related parts of machinery and evaluates the reliability of safety systems through the PL (Performance Level).

In line with accelerating the convergence of artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics technology, Samsung Electronics developed a safety software framework that minimizes potential hazards caused by failures or malfunctions of mobile robots. This framework provides 10 safety control functions such as emergency and protective stops, collision detection, and maximum speed limitation, and has been recognized for its high safety by obtaining the robot safety integrity levels of 'SIL (Safety Integrity Level) 2' and 'PL (Performance Level) d'.

The software framework certified this time by Samsung Electronics differs from existing robots in that it enables integrated management of robot control and safety functions without a separate hardware controller for safety functions, and improves the robot's fault diagnosis and avoidance capabilities. Furthermore, if applied to various mobile robots in manufacturing, service, and home use in the future, it is expected to greatly enhance product development efficiency and robot driving safety.

Patrizia Campi, Head of Global Product Assurance at DNV, stated, "Samsung Electronics' safety software framework has passed DNV's rigorous review process," adding, "Technological innovation requires industry collaboration and the establishment of safety standards, and we are very pleased to cooperate with Samsung to lead the development of safe robotics technology."

Choi Goeun, Team Leader of the Robot Platform Team at Samsung Research, Samsung Electronics, said, "By obtaining this international standard certification, we have proven the safety and reliability of platforms equipped with the Samsung robot software framework," and added, "We will continue to strive to contribute to the advancement of robotics technology."
